New York artist Dan Flavin (1933-1996) began working with the light of fluorescent tubes in the early 1960s. In 1989, he adorned the large Oberlichtsaal of the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden with a four-colour skylight made of fluorescent tubes. In the other exhibition rooms, the artist also created works with immense luminosity, giving them a new aura through their interaction with natural daylight. Since then, a work he developed for the exhibition has been shining from the exterior wall of the Kunsthalle in the red and yellow colours of Baden: untitled (to the people of Baden-Baden, respectfully), 1989.
