To this day, the steel work Untitled (1978) on the hill in front of the Staatliche Kunsthalle is a testament to the important exhibition of Richard Serra (*1939) in Baden-Baden. The 1978 show also featured the massive steel blocks Consequence, Tot and Berlin Block for Charlie Chaplin, created the year before. With these sculptures, the artist changed the space outside the Kunsthalle. He placed his work in the visitors’ path, made them find new routes and think around corners. Although industrially produced, the sculptures are without use. Instead, they refer to themselves, to their weight, their mass, and the gravity that makes them possible.
