Monira Al Qadiri: Deep Float (2020)
Das Werk Deep Float der Künstlerin Monira Al Qadiri ist Teil der Großen Sonderausstellung des Landes Baden-Württemberg 2020 „Körper. Blicke. Macht. Eine Kulturgeschichte des Bades“ in der Staatlichen Kunsthalle Baden-Baden. Im Zentrum der Ausstellung steht eine globale soziale Praxis, die so alt ist wie die Menschheit selbst. Obwohl von jeher mit Reinigungsritualen verbunden, offenbaren sich hier über die Jahrhunderte hinweg Bezüge, die weit über Themen wie Hygiene, Gesundheit und Wohlbefinden hinausgehen. Tatsächlich waren das Bad als Ort und der Akt des Badens immer auch ideologisch, religiös, sozial und kulturell aufgeladen – und sie sind es bis heute. Die Schau versammelt eine Vielzahl von Objekten, kunsthistorischen Meisterwerken und aktuelle Gegenwartskunst aus diversen historischen, geografischen sowie kulturellen Zusammenhängen und präsentiert die Badekultur damit als Spiegelbild der jeweiligen Gesellschaft. Es geht um Heiliges und Profanes, Reinheit und Schmutz, Wohltuendes und Schädliches, Öffentliches und Privates, Nacktheit und Bekleidung, Aristokratisches und Populäres und nicht zuletzt: Macht-, Klassen- und Geschlechterverhältnisse. In Kooperation mit dem Mucem in Marseille entwickelt, bespielt die Schau über die Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden hinaus verschiedene Orte der Bäderstadt.

Monira Al Qadiri: Deep Float (2020)
The work Deep Float by artist Monira Al Qadiri is part of the major special exhibition of the federal state of Baden-Württemberg 2020 “Body. Gaze. Power. A Cultural History of the Bath” at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden. At the centre of the exhibition stands a global social practice as old as humankind itself. Although it has always been associated with cleansing rituals, over the centuries it has revealed references that go far beyond topics such as hygiene, health and well-being. Indeed, the bathroom as a place and the act of bathing have always been – and still are today – ideologically, religiously, socially and culturally charged. The show brings together a large number of objects, art historical masterpieces and contemporary art from various historical, geographical and cultural contexts, thus presenting the culture of bathing as a reflection of the respective society. It is about the sacred and the profane, purity and dirt, the beneficial and the harmful, the public and the private, nudity and clothing, the aristocratic and the popular and last but not least: power, class and gender relations. Developed in cooperation with Mucem in Marseille, the show extends beyond the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden into various locations of the spa town.
